X3Mex Skim Melaque 2008

X3Mex Skim board Contest Melaque 2008 - February 1st,2nd and 3rd

Last years contest was a success and well attended but this year it even looks to be larger. Last year there was only one surfer from Acapulco - this year there will be four. Also a promise a of few more guys from the US.

This is a little early to post this event but I have a neighbor that will be competing and he keeps reminding me it's coming.

Desfile de Niños - Childrens Parade

There are at least 3-4 different occasions each year in Mexican communities that have childrens parades. Some are on National holidays and others for local celebrations. The fotos below are a November celebration in Villa Obregon, Melaque Mexico. The costumes or uniforms vary with the age of the kids starting with the youngest in traditional.

Day of the Dead in Melaque

November 3rd is Day of the Dead in Mexico and this is a High School competition on the Plaza in Melaque on November 1st. Student teams create the displays that resemble the way grave sites are decorated. Offerings include food, booze, favorite music, clothes and other personal items. When the sun goes down candles and small fires are lit

Musica por nuestra Gente - Melaque

November third (this Saturday) there will be a fund raising concert at the 'conha de futbol' in Barra de Navidad (that's the soccer field as you enter Barra). This fund raiser is to help the people of Melaque who were flooded a few months ago and lost most everything.

Tickets are $80 pesos early or $100 at the door. All the groups are major Mexican bands so consider it if you are here. Rostro Ocultos, Nahuta, Beto Piteado, Hugo Rodrigues, etc

Tropical Storm Henriette

Tropical Storm Henriette
Melaque, Jalisco - Mexico - 2007

Even with the new bridge over the highway there was just too much water for the man-made channel to handle. Years ago this whole area was a lagoon and the river that follows highway 80 down from the mountains (named Lazaro Cardenas according to Mari) used to run through Arroyo Seco, Aquacate and behind Jaluco. The engineering and money to control that much water a few times a year probably just won't happen. That could include a control dam up in the mountains that might also work well for crop irrigation

The bottom foto is of the opening of the lagoon which they are forced to do when the level rises enough to flood houses in the area. They use a back-hoe to dig a small channel and the water does the rest. The wave action is a river running into heavy surf. The bay is filthy and won't be safe to swim for a week.

A mess of a beach but they always recover in a few months

Primer Ecosan AproSanidad Melaque, A.C.

A lecturer at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands, describes the functioning of the urine-diversion dehydrating (UDD) toilet. This toilet has been installed in May 2006 and helps to raise awareness about possibilities of waterless sanitation with the ultimate aim to recycle nutrients back to the land in accordance with the ecological sanitation (ecosan) approach. For more information see also www.unesco-ihe.org or search in google for ecosan.

First rain of the season

First good rain of the season, a little early and without a month of very hot weather preceding. It's been raining now for a couple hours, lost electric a few times, some thunder. The weatherman was right

You may not think this a vey big thing but rain is what cools us off and brings back the beauty of the coast. Actually most of Mexico is pretty dry right now and really looks forward to the rain. We also have 'land crabs' that spend 90% of the dry season underground. The first rain always brings out tons of them. Cars run over them, kids and pets kill them and their holes (cave entrances) are everywhere. These little monsters range in size from a few inches to 6-7 inches across. There are even some large enough near La Manzanilla, the locals eat them.

The first foto is our street just before the rain started with dark clouds in the background. Then, after the rain followed by a larger than normal crab buddy

Red Tide - Marea Roja

Red Tide or Marea Roja (called locally) is here in Melaque and the Costalegre. The ocean smells terrible within a couple of blocks. Not sure what the fishermen are doing but it is advised not to eat any seafood for the duration. I thought it had to do with warm water but the ocean is cold here now - and Red Tide is common as far north as Canada.

"Red Tide" is a common name for a phenomenon known as an algal bloom, an event in which estuarine, marine, or fresh water algae accumulate rapidly in the water column, or "bloom". These algae, more correctly termed phytoplankton, are microscopic, single-celled protists, plant-like organisms that can form dense, visible patches near the water's surface. Certain species of phytoplankton contain photosynthetic pigments that vary in color from green to brown to red, and when the algae are present in high concentrations, the water appears to be discolored or murky, varying in color from white to almost black, normally being red or brown. Not all algal blooms are dense enough to cause water discoloration, and not all discolored waters associated with algal blooms are red. Additionally, red tides are not typically associated with tidal movement of water, hence the preference among scientists to use the term algal bloom.

The Melaque Cave

If anyone has wanted to check out the cave - now is the time to do it. They have the whole area in front cleared. Not sure if this is a once a year thing to keep the brush down or if something is planned.

Oddly enough I noticed a small sign on the lateral street saying Rapel and an arrow pointing in that direction. The cliff is pretty shear so it might be the next Melaque attaction.

The Cave entrance just off the highway

The rock face they'll use to rapel

"Some fellows, I think from Guadalajara, came by our store over Semana Santa and asked if they could put up a poster about Rapeling in Melaque, they also had a poster up at Christmas. Don't know much about it apart from that but the poster is still up in the office with a contact number from the 333 exchange if anyone feels like jumping off a cliff."

Besides clearing the land they won't have to do much except maybe build a palapa to work out of.

And then comes Semana Santa

... and this was only last Thursday. This weekend we are staying away from the beach because there's not even a place to sit, let alone walk. Bus after bus load of people has been rolling in for the last week. There are 10+ police directing traffic, streets are closed at night downtown, extra police and ambulances from around the state are here, Mariachi and highschool bands walk the beach and town. Bring your stove, a tank of gas, a few plastic chairs and set up a restaurant in the median. Everyone that lives in Melaque is selling something.

Our end of town is less crowded because the ocean is less friendly here with large waves. Red flags line the beach but people are still entering the water. So far one drowning and a broken arm - both in the center of town. Hopefully no more problems as the crowds will start to thin out this week.

After all the Gringos go home

By April 1st just about all the Gringos have returned north again for the end of yet another Winter season. With just a week or 2 of relative peace and quiet - suddenly comes Semana Santa and with it the hords of Mexicans that will fill our area for almost 2 weeks. The buses are starting to arrive, we did our last minute shopping and the Mariachi bands are already walking the beaches. I took this foto of the 'West End Trailer Park' a few days ago with not a Gringo Mobile in sight. The place will soon be full of Mexican car campers.

The surf is unusually large and I hope not too many unfamiliar with the ocean get in trouble. Lifeguards are walking the beach. I'll have more fotos as the town fills up to record my first Semana Santa on the beach in Mexico.

Primavera Parade in Villa Obregon

Another first for me since I am usually up north at this time. I guess it's pretty common to dress up the kindergarten kids for these parades. I hear there was another one in Central Melaque.

There were about 3 Princesas de Primavera and about every type of flower and animal that you could imagine ... all in hand made costumes. Very creative moms.

Baseball in Melaque

Baseball in Melaque and Barra de Navidad has been a long time coming. The collecting of equipment started almost 2 years ago and it seems we are finally seeing the results. Pedro of Seamaster in Barra has been the collector, organizer and promoter of kids baseball in our area.

Foto and info from Jim Dobson

"These pics were taken at the soccer field in Melaque , the man in the middle is a school teacher and I have forgot his name but he is a coach . Pedro and I are on the end, these kids are sure excited about the chance to play ball and it shows. As soon as Pedro sends me the pictures of the first game and the kids in uniform I will send them."

X3MEX - Melaque Skim 2007

There was enough surf to hold the competition in Melaque but it's always questionable this time of year. I just threw these fotos together to get the feeling of it. As always it takes 20 fotos to get a good one. At times the photographers were getting in each others way - at least in mine! There were guys from up and down the coast - as far as Acapulco - and one guy from California

Bienvenido a Melaque

I ran across this Blog from someone that visited Melaque in December. What caught my eye was that it reminded her of Vietnam and I had to check further to see what kind of negative experience would make her draw that similarity. As it turns out she had a good time and only the typical Mexico confusion in the streets and daily shopping reminded her of time spent in Vietnam. Here's her foto and part of the article. There's a link to the full page at the bottom.

Buenas dias from Mexico! I'm lounging on our deck, palm trees rustling overhead in the warm breeze, and waves slamming against the shore a few steps away. It's been a busy day: breakfast, sunning, lunch, sunning, snack, sunning - intersperced with reading and chatting. I'm exhausted just writing about it! Our house is right on the Bahia de Navidad, and I'm thrilled to be back at the beach again.

Melaque is a small town on the Pacific coast of central Mexico (the Costa Alegre), about 200 miles from Puerto Vallerta. Although touted as a tourist destination, it doesn't resemble the Anglo version of one. It reminds me of Vietnam, to be honest. Small shops selling a variety of day-to-day goods and beach toys - street vendors - cars cruising by, playing everything from Eminem to Cyndi Lauper, reminding us that girls just want to have fun.

Trimming the Palms in Melaque

We needed to clean the palm trees so we could use the hammock between/under them and they were ready for harvest anyway. We ended up feeding half the block with fresh coconut milk. This guy does this for a living .... as many private homes and hotels as possible because the palm grove work is pretty miserable. The flowers of the palm below are often used for quinceanera parties.

Cleaning a Pulpo (octopus)

Somebody in the family brought home a pulpo and it was decided to have it for dinner. Mari took it out to the wash table and waited until I got my camera

First you take out the ink sack and the rest of the insides - then you start scrubbing. Lots of scrubbing and rinsing to remove the slime Finally she removed the beak (boca) and a few small parts of the head

She boils it for an hour with garlic and onions and cuts it up in small chucks. This was fried in garlic butter, a little salt and worcestershire sauce. Veracruzana or diabla are other ways to cook it. Crisp tortillas, lime and jalapenos on the side

Cuastecomate

We were out making the rounds looking at lots yesterday and there were a few in the back of Cuastecomate. A few in the valley but also 5-6 along the old road. Some of these have amazing views but the lots are nearly vertical. Considering La Manzanilla has similar lots for more money, worse access roads and is so far away from everything ... Cuastecomate looks real good. The first picture is from the highest point and lots there are about $55k. A few further down are closer to $30k but less view, expensive to build on that slope and someone might build higher next to you.
