West Melaque Street Party

This Saturday the 13th of February a Street Party put on by the Primavera Community. Starts at 5 PM at Calle Eucalipto # 135. Sounds like fun and no entrance fee.

Lots of talk on Tomzap about this place so I had to go find it. Sadly it's only open 8AM till noon and I don't get into Melaque until after one. She is also only open Monday through Friday. I'm not much into the sweet stuff but there is a rumor she makes a good light rye bread.

It's located at Calle Cedro #45 which is the very last street one the west end of Primavera. It looks like she sets up inside a 3 car garage about 3 doors up from the beach restaurants.

A new restaurant this year. Another that is aimed at the winter tourist crowd and will probably go away right after Semana Santa in April. I don't know anything about it except that it's attractive and in an area with no other restaurants except those on the beach. Maybe a little upscale to attract the average beach going Mexican but who knows. As far as I know the street is Primavera but they chose Primaveras -- in West Melaque.

For those that favor the west end of Melaque for beach and or restaurants .... the streets are finally finished. Compared to much of Melaque they really weren't all that bad but they are a whole lot nicer now. Going to be more parking and a whole lot less dust. I've heard from people a few blocks away that it takes everyone on your street to pay to have it done ... but I can't imagine that happening anywhere. Maybe just a few big spenders?   Whatever the story it's nice to have some real streets.

Primavera Block Party - Sat, Jan 18th

Its that time of year again. We are doing the Annual Primavera Block Party. It's BYOB and bring your own snacks. This year there will be burgers and hot-dog for sale as well. We supply the live music, location and tables and the only admission is a non perishable item such as rice, beans, clothes, formula, diapers, etc. This year we are focusing on single mothers and children which can give you a better idea of what to bring. We will be doing 50/50 raffles and raffling other items in order to cover the cost of the table rentals and sound system rental. Any money extra made will buy school supplies for the kids.

If you own a business or have something you would like to donate for the raffles? please contact me a few days before in order to give me enough time to make a gift certificate.

The day after the event we will need some volunteers to re organize the items into care packages and then help distribute them. Anybody interested can just show up the next day at Posada Arianna to help.

Last year was a success we had nearly 250 ppl show up and the party was amazing, but most importantly we received so many donations it filled up the pool area at the hotel.

I hope to double it this year. So come on by and have a good time with us for a good cause.

My Melaque Garden

Spring is here it seems as the Primavera (spring) trees are in bloom as well as my garden. The Aloe or Aloe Vera sprouted flowers in less than a week after living here for a little over a year. Not sure but think a neighbor gave me that one.

The Pineapple is getting bigger and that is from the top of one I bought at the local store. It's also about a year old. The bananas started a flower almost two months ago, the fruit came quickly after and now seems to have slowed. I did have to prop up this "tree" as it was starting to droop.

There are about 10 tomato plants that came up as volunteers in my compost pile and the first is almost 4 feet tall with lots of fruit (still green). Most of the others are being attacked by little white flies probably laying eggs. Two plants are almost dead and all have curly and brown leaves. I finally gave them a soap/water spray and the flies seem to have gone away. We'll see. I had no problems with my cherry tomatoes that produced tons for almost two months.

Figured out my Mint or Yerba Buena preferred the shade over direct sun and is doing much better. My radishes only produced leaves. The chives and carrots never did anything. The Mexican corn looks good and the gringo corn didn't like it here. The ever bearing lime trees without spines are not ever bearing as I've had none for about two months ... but lots of flowers and babies on them now. Thinking about fertilizer for the limes. Always something new in the garden.

Primavera Parade in Villa Obregon

Another first for me since I am usually up north at this time. I guess it's pretty common to dress up the kindergarten kids for these parades. I hear there was another one in Central Melaque.

There were about 3 Princesas de Primavera and about every type of flower and animal that you could imagine ... all in hand made costumes. Very creative moms.
