Melaque's new "sign"

New sign on the plaza

I saw this for the first time yesterday and assume it's been up for the whole festival which ended yesterday. I thought only large towns around Mexico were getting these but they are getting around to the small ones

Locals are unhappy saying it should be San Patricio and Melaque is the West end near the old hotel

Pre-Grito

Lorena saw the parade from a few blocks away so we followed them over towards the plaza. This was late afternoon. I don't know if they entertained on the plaza later because just minutes after these fotos we got drenched by a downpour. I've been to enough Gritos so feel no need to stay up past midnight.

The school kids parades were this morning but there are lots of those .... so another day.

Papas on the Plaza

El Rinconcito

A recent discussion on Tomzap about stuffed potatoes and a few were mentioned in Barra and Melaque. The most famous is Las Güinas in Villa Obregon but their papas are huge and over stuffed. You might be able to order a toned down version but haven't tried them .... and they are expensive.

This place is on the corner of the Plaza at the entrance to Taco Row. Their papas are small, inexpensive and you choose what you want on them like tacos. I've seen them cooking but they weren't ready and I seldom get into town in the evening anymore. Gonna have to force myself so I can try them

Desfile de La Dia de 9 16 2015 Independencia

Normally they march around town but this time just on the Plaza. Maybe for water in the streets or fear of rain. The usual cacophony of terrible marching music but hey .... these are Secondary school kids.

Hundreds of students attended the parade for Independence day. A speech was also given by the Delegado of Melaque. (Cientos de estudiantes participaron en el desfile para el día de la Independencia. Un discurso también fue dada por el Delegado de Melaque.)

San Patricio Fiesta on St. Patrick's Day

All week Nahima has been wanting to go on the small kiddie rides (juegitos) and we finally went on the last day of the fiesta (Saint Patrick's Day). I think the noise and wall to wall people over whelmed her so no rides tonight. Usually we go early during the week with a lot less people and excitement. She did play a game rolling marbles and actually won a small stuffed dog and a plaster of paris painting project. Pretty cool

I heard that Sunday or Monday the Castillo was rained out so maybe why there were two, side by side. We were on the far side of the Plaza by the school with less people and away from the crazy Toritoes. Lots of pin-wheels, rockets and two coronas as the finale. Fun night, I slept in because we didn't get back until after 1am.

The Toritos are what we avoided. The kids would definitely be afraid but they are dangerous for anyone. I was so surprised by the great overhead fireworks at the end I totally forgot to bring out my IPhone camera. Don't remember large explosive multi-colored fireworks before.

Hot Dogs and Papas Relleno

I dropped by the Melaque Plaza after spending the day on the beach in Cuastecomate. I'd heard about a good hot dog stand and a potato place on the south east corner so wanted to check them out and I was hungry. The hot dog stand was open so I tried a bacon wrapped with fresh topping.  I could have skipped the fried onions as the raw stuff was better. He also sells hamburgers but some other day for that.

The filled baked potatoes was behind him across the street on the corner. Tacos and Quesadillas is what their sign says but down on the bottom in red it says Papas Relleno. They open at 6:30 to 7 so I was too early but it sounds like they have basic topping rather than many options and lots of it. She said they were 50 pesos  but I'd have to see them for value.  Seemed in Mazatlan they were about twice the price of a taco, not 5 times

Papas Las Guinas in Villa Obregon

Papas Asadas Rellenas - Estilo Sinaloa

I just ran across this place today on the corner of Aberto Macias and Fco Villa in Villa Obregon. I guess the reason I didn't look sooner is the fotos I've seen of their potatoes. Even though they say "Sinaloa Style" they are nothing like what I've eaten for street food in Mazatlan. In Mazatlan the potatoes are all medium (not large) and a spoon full of crema. After that you put on whatever toppings go on their tacos which are sold from the same stand. The foto of this restaurant's potato was dripping and over flowing with way too much for me to eat in one sitting. Sign says open Monday-Saturday, 6 to10pm.

I hear there is a "Papas Lady" on the SE corner of the Melaque Plaza - same street as the church .... and maybe a hot-dog vendor on the same corner. People have really enjoyed both so gonna have to get in there some night and check it out.

Annual Melaque Plaza Dia de los Muertos

These should be available to view most of Thursday as they build them. All day Friday and into the evening as well. Most spectacular in the evening when when all the candles are lit. Years past the High School has done this and I think a Secondaria. This year it looks like CECYTEJ (technical school in Jaluco) has the honors.

For people that want to see the real thing in the area Panteon ... most decorations will be placed November 2nd.  The Panteon is out Highway 80 and you are welcome to visit. At night not advised.

Villa Obregon WiFi Zone

I'd heard a few weeks ago that the Villa Obregon plaza was a WiFi Zone but someone just posted this picture of the sign on the Delegación of Villa Obregón office.  Just means I don't know if the signal will reach the plaza.
