Ovillanta pilot project
Ovillanta pilot project - reducing mosquito population in Melaque/Barra
All are invited to this community meeting to learn more about "ovillantas" -- a DIY community-based solution to controlling transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. save the date: Saturday, April 30, 2-5pm at the Casa Ejidal in San Patricio.
Dr. Ulibarri, the lead researcher & inventor of this method for reducing mosquito populations, will be presenting on the "ovillanta" project this coming Saturday, April 30, 2-5pm at the Casa Ejidal in San Patricio.
The presentation will be primarily in Spanish, but Dr. Ulibarri can also answer questions in English. Please spread the word in your neighbourhood -- this is a grassroots, community, DIY type project that will rely on people coordinating with their neighbours to install and maintain traps (mosquito eggs must be removed and destroyed on a regular basis). Come and learn more if you can support the project!

Expo-venta de "Coqueta"
Have you not tried the coconut caramel treat? The company "COQUETA" will have a large Expo-sale which will take place on February 26 this year, in the Jardin of San Patricio Melaque, from 5:00 pm.
Cajeta is a Mexican confection of thickened syrup usually made of sweetened caramelised goat's milk.
Mexican cajeta is considered a specialty of the city of Celaya in the state of Guanajuato, although it is also produced with the traditional method in several towns of the state of Jalisco, such as Mazamitla, Sayula, and Atotonilco el Alto.
Cajeta is made by simmering goat's milk, or occasionally a sweetened liquid, stirring frequently, until it becomes very viscous due to evaporation of water, and caramelized. While goat milk is the most usual base, other liquids or juices may be used.

San Patricio Fiesta on St. Patrick's Day
All week Nahima has been wanting to go on the small kiddie rides (juegitos) and we finally went on the last day of the fiesta (Saint Patrick's Day). I think the noise and wall to wall people over whelmed her so no rides tonight. Usually we go early during the week with a lot less people and excitement. She did play a game rolling marbles and actually won a small stuffed dog and a plaster of paris painting project. Pretty cool
I heard that Sunday or Monday the Castillo was rained out so maybe why there were two, side by side. We were on the far side of the Plaza by the school with less people and away from the crazy Toritoes. Lots of pin-wheels, rockets and two coronas as the finale. Fun night, I slept in because we didn't get back until after 1am.

The Toritos are what we avoided. The kids would definitely be afraid but they are dangerous for anyone. I was so surprised by the great overhead fireworks at the end I totally forgot to bring out my IPhone camera. Don't remember large explosive multi-colored fireworks before.

San Patricio Festival rides are here
The Carnival rides are almost ready for Sunday. They may open them Saturday. The street in front is lined with more like that Foosball booth below. Other food or sweets booths will join the one on the corner next to OXXO. That narrows the street enough that the large intercity buses can't make the corner so they're gonna have to find another way for 10 days. Nahima had to have some sweets so we stopped.

Festival San Patricio
It's that time again for 10 days of activities, March 8th through the 17th. Parades, music, misas (mass), fireworks and I'm sure the carnival rides will be where they usually are, a half block from the plaza.

San Patricio - Melaque Lagoon
This idyllic scene is across from Melaque Prepa (High School) which is about a mile north of the highway and downtown. It is this wet or wetter all the way to the lagoon by the Sports Complex. The road from the Prepa to the Pinal Villa road is not passable due to running water. Running water crosses the Pinal Villa road in 3 places and fields are filled with water similar to the foto above. Most water on that side is headed for Laguna del Tule but there is still a lot to the west.
I've heard they stopped pumping waste water out to the old non-functioning treatment plant for awhile but it does not seem to lessen the amount of water flowing everywhere. There's some talk of an artificial lagoon for sewage treatment but the whole area is becoming a natural lagoon without help from people.

Baptize a puddle near you
Baptized as Laguna Los Pericos
"Baptism" of pools in San Patricio-Melaque
It seems a joke to baptize a puddle as "Laguna Los Pericos" but in the delegation of San Patricio Melaque-some residents are tired of flooding in their homes and commercial establishments.
Juárez street, an area with puddles is already known as a lagoon, but the worst is the latent risk that storm storm hundreds of families who suffer the authorities require a permanent solution to the flooding problem.
The previous weekend, the municipal government of Cihuatlán allocated resources to repair and maintain three pumps operating in the stream connecting carcamo El Pedregal, however flooding is still present on the main avenues of this delegation. (August 22, 2014)

Melaque's White Elephant
After spending many thousands of pesos for the San Patricio sports complex a few years ago it is hardly used and upkeep is being neglected. Maintenance under the direction of General Services Sports Cihuatlán Township was not properly considered and no budget allocated.
A few weeks ago the creation of a steering committee was announced, but the responsibility for funding and maintaining these public spaces in good condition is up to the authorities.

Roosters asks for equal treatment
Restaurant owners of Rooster, located in the municipal delegation of San Patricio-Melaque are asking local authorities for equal treatment from the department of Padrón and Licenses.
They note that on Wednesday April 9, at approximately noon, arrived at the restaurant four identified as employees of the Municipality of Cihuatlán department of Register and Licenses, requiring removal of tables and chairs with umbrella from the street along with the likeness of a "Catrina".
They stated that the municipal employees acted arrogant when criticized for the notorious "inequality" in dealing with different businesses that also use the street and sidewalk as part of their business.
"We just want to work," Roosters owner said, lamenting the harassment of the municipal authority.

San Patricio Secondaria
I got about 5 not very good pictures of current school construction and decided on these two. Basically there are two very large classroom buildings and four smaller buildings. They all have roofs, floors and 3/4's of them are painted. Windows and doors are in all but the last large one below. Both Yari and Euriel are excited that the new school may be ready for them next Fall.

Alvero Obregon Paved
This paving project started almost a year ago or at least seems that long, probably more like 8 months. Getting across town for the duration has been interesting not knowing from day o day which parts will be open. It was usually easier to go to the highway and drive around. New sewers and sidewalks included. The ramp to the highway was just finished this week. One more street without potholes and dust!

Alvaro Obregon construction
Alvaro Obregon construction is going to be a long project. They plan on a divided street with sidewalks, cement pavers and a planted island in the middle. Alvaro Obregon is the obvious divider between Villa Obregon and Melaque/San Patricio ... tho not the legal one. It runs from the beach to the highway and is the widest street in town.
For the last two months they have been battling rain and mud along with redoing the sewers and sewer access so progress has been slow. Traffic between the two communities has been reduced to one crossing point unless you go out to the highway.
Because Alvaro Obregon is not used much, traffic switches to other routes causing the streets to fall apart faster. Improvements here are always an uphill battle but hopefully we'll soon see less rain and a little cooler weather. That would be a good thing

False Alarm about Presa El Pedregal overflow
I've wanted to see the new dam up highway 80 called Presa El Pedregal (Stone Dam) but have not had the time or really known it's location. With all the rain the unpaved roads have been bad and I didn't want to try. I found this short article and fotos on an area website.
False Alarm Overflow Dam El Pedregal
Given the large amount of water that recent rains have left the coast of Jalisco, residents of San Patricio, Melaque were alarmed by the possibility that the Presa El Pedregal might overflow, thereby causing some panic.
In this situation , the Municipal Civil Protection Commander AC David Fregoso, told the media that the water levels of the Dam El Pedregal did not represent any danger to the population, since it's about 80 % capacity, which is about 1 million 300 thousand liters, Added to this, he said the dam is displacing water in a controlled and moderate manner.
La Presa El Pedregal, which recently opened in this rainstorm has gathered a considerable amount of water preventing areas in Melaque from flooding as they have previously .
